What this means
Error code 077-900 means an optical sensor in the paper path is still blocked. The error stays on the screen until every last scrap is gone.
You pulled out the main sheet and assumed the jam was clear. It is easy to think the machine is malfunctioning, but a tiny torn piece is usually still covering the sensor.
The printer is not broken. It is just reporting a physical blockage on its internal sightline. Dust and toner buildup on the sensor windows also cause false jam readings by tricking the machine into seeing paper where none exists.
Common causes
- A torn piece of paper is stuck over a sensor.
- Paper is misaligned in the tray causing a feed failure.
- Dust or toner buildup on the paper path sensors.
- Worn feed rollers failing to pull paper completely past the sensor.
- Damp or curled paper causing misfeeds and jams.
- The rear door or side covers are not fully latched.
- Manual feed slot has a small obstruction.
What to check first
- 1Check all paper trays for improperly loaded paper.
- 2Ensure no loose labels or scraps are inside the output area.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Open Indicated Access Doors
Open every door and cover specified by the control panel animation. Check thoroughly inside each compartment.
- 2
Inspect Main Paper Path
Look carefully along the entire paper route for jammed sheets. Pull gently in the direction of paper feed to avoid tearing.
- 3
Search for Torn Scraps
Look closely near sensors and rollers for tiny ripped paper pieces blocking the optical paths. Use a flashlight.
- 4
Check the Fuser Area
Open the fuser access cover and check if paper is wrapped around the rollers.
Ensure the printer has been powered off and allowed to cool for at least twenty minutes before touching this area.
- 5
Review Paper Trays and Guides
Pull out each paper tray. Remove the stack of paper, fan it, align the side guides snugly against the paper stack, and reload.
- 6
Clean Rubber Rollers
Wipe the rubber feed rollers with a clean, lint free cloth slightly dampened with water to restore grip.
- 7
Check Duplex Unit
Remove the rear duplex module if your model has one and check for trapped paper inside.
- 8
Perform a Hard Power Cycle
Turn off the printer using the power button, unplug the power cord for sixty seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on.
When to contact a professional
Unplug the printer and let the fuser cool completely before you look inside. Call a Xerox service technician if the 077-900 error immediately returns after you clear all visible paper and tiny scraps. Do the same if a sensor lever is broken or stuck out of place. Check your warranty before attempting any repairs that go beyond clearing jammed paper if your machine is still covered.
