What this means
When your printer reports a paper jam but you cannot see any paper, it does not mean a full sheet is stuck. It just means an internal sensor is blocked or triggered. You do not have a software glitch, and you are not missing some massive clog. Printers use optical sensors and mechanical flags to track paper as it moves.
If anything interrupts this tracking, the machine assumes paper is permanently lodged. A mechanical sensor flag might have failed to spring back to its default position. Dust or toner might be blocking the infrared light beam of an optical sensor. Even adhesive residue left behind by a peeled label will trap dust and trigger a permanent error.
Sometimes you have a timing error because slick, dirty rollers or static electricity caused sheets to double-feed. Other times, a tiny, baked-on paper fragment is hiding in the fuser area where you cannot see it. The printer is merely reacting to a broken connection in its path, even if that connection is broken by nothing more than a speck of dust or a stuck plastic flag.
Common causes
- A tiny, torn piece of paper from a previous real jam is still stuck inside.
- A mechanical sensor flag is stuck in the 'paper present' position.
- Dust, lint, or spilled toner is blocking an optical sensor beam.
- The paper feed rollers are dirty or worn, failing to move paper and causing a timing error.
- Outdated printer firmware causing false sensor readings.
What to check first

Check for tiny torn paper fragments
Look closely at the entry and exit rollers. Use tweezers to gently pull out any small scraps of paper, labels, or adhesive residue. Even a scrap the size of a fingernail can trigger the sensor.
Do not pull forcefully on stuck paper scraps to avoid breaking internal plastic gears.

Manually clear the sensor flags
Locate the small plastic levers (flags) along the paper path. They should move freely when pushed gently with a pen tip and spring back into place. If a flag is stuck down, gently wiggle it until it snaps back up.
Do not use excessive force. These plastic flags are fragile and can snap easily.

Clean the optical sensors
Locate the optical sensor slots along the paper path. Use a can of compressed air to blow away dust, paper fibers, or toner from these areas. You can also use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe them.
Do not spray compressed air too close to the sensors or upside down, as liquid propellant can damage the electronics.

Clean the rubber feed rollers
Dirty rollers slip and fail to pull paper on time, which the printer interprets as a jam. Wipe the rubber rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Rotate them manually to clean the entire surface.
Never use rubbing alcohol or harsh chemicals on rubber rollers, as it can dry them out and cause cracking.

Perform a hard power reset
With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer. Unplug the other end from the wall. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the cord back directly into a wall outlet, then reconnect to the printer and power it on.
Do not plug the printer into a surge protector during this test, as some printers require direct wall power to reset internal sensors properly.
When to contact a professional
Always unplug the printer before reaching inside to clean the sensors or rollers. The fuser reaches extremely high temperatures, so let it cool for at least 15 minutes before working near it. If you have cleared all debris, cleaned the sensors, and verified that the mechanical flags move freely, but the error still returns immediately upon power-up, stop. Call a professional. Your sensor electronics or the main controller board are damaged. Attempting to repair these internal electronic components yourself will void your warranty.
