How to Clear a Printer Paper Jam Safely

Paper is trapped in the printer path. A jam error means a sheet broke the timing of the sensors along the route. The error does not point to the exact location of the obstruction, and a tiny scrap left behind means the problem remains. Clearing the visible sheet does not fix the machine. Torn paper on optical sensors continues to trigger jam errors even when the path looks empty. Do not pull paper backward against the feed direction. That damages internal gears and turns a simple blockage into a mechanical failure.

   Power Down and Open Access Doors

   Turn off the printer using its power button and unplug the power cord. Open all rear and top covers to expose the paper path.

   Never work on a printer while it is plugged in.

   Pull Paper in the Direction of Travel

   Grasp the jammed paper with both hands and pull it gently in the normal direction of paper travel to avoid tearing.

   Pulling backward against the rollers can break internal gears.

   Check Underneath the Paper Tray

   Remove the main paper cassette completely and look underneath the printer for sheets caught in the lower feed area.

   Inspect and Clean the Rollers

   Wipe the rubber pickup rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to restore their grip.

   Clear Hidden Scraps from Sensors

   Use a flashlight to look for tiny paper fragments resting on the optical sensors. Remove them carefully with your fingers.
