When your printer throws an out-of-paper error or reports a jam, it isn't telling you a main circuit board failed. It is reacting to a physical failure in the tray area because paper didn't pass an optical edge sensor at the expected time.
Textured rubber pickup rollers rely on friction to grab one sheet while separation pads hold back the lower pages. If the roller fails to grab a page or pulls several at once, the sensors flag a fault.
You might assume a feeding failure means a permanent mechanical breakdown, but paper dust buildup on the rubber rollers is usually the culprit. Optical edge sensors can also flag false jams that a full power cycle resets without complex repairs.
The feed process depends entirely on controlled friction and proper alignment. Overfilling the paper tray stops the internal spring mechanism from lifting paper high enough to make contact with the rollers. Set the tray guides incorrectly, and the paper skews and jams immediately.
Environment matters just as much. High ambient humidity makes sheets stick together from moisture retention, while low humidity creates static electricity that binds pages together.
Pickup roller tires on many business class printers are designed as replaceable wear items. Do not clean them with alcohol or chemical solvents, which degrade the rubber compounds and cause them to slip sooner.

Slide the length and width paper guides until they contact the edges of the paper stack. Ensure the guides keep the stack centered without binding or curving the paper.

Clean the rubber pickup rollers
Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord. Open the paper tray or access door to locate the rubber pickup rollers. Wipe the rubber surface with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to remove dust and dirt. Allow rollers to dry completely before testing.
Do not use isopropyl alcohol, harsh chemicals, or abrasive materials. Solvents dry out and damage rubber rollers.

Clean the separation pad
Locate the small rubber or cork separation pad positioned opposite the pickup rollers in the tray assembly. Gently wipe away paper dust using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.

On printers with display menus, navigate to Setup, Maintenance, or Tools. Select the roller cleaning routine if available and follow on-screen prompts.
