What this means
Your printer is reporting that paper jammed or took too long to reach a sensor along the paper path. The number 13 indicates a paper jam event. The b2 sub code points directly to the rear lower paper path or the duplex unit.
Inside, tiny optical sensors use plastic flags to interrupt a light beam as paper passes. This error means a sensor detected paper arriving late or staying too long. A stuck paper fragment often blocks the sensor flag from returning to its home position. Feeding delays also happen when you use paper weights the printer cannot handle.
Pulling out the visible jammed sheet does not always fix the problem. Tiny torn scraps left behind in the duplex unit continue to block the sensors. This triggers phantom jams even when the paper path looks completely clear.
Common causes
- Torn piece of paper stuck in the paper path
- Worn pickup rollers causing slow feed
- Paper loaded incorrectly or overfilled in the input tray
- Dust or toner buildup on the optical paper sensors
- Damp or curled paper sticking together
What to check first
- 1Check the rear access door for trapped paper
- 2Inspect the paper stack in the input tray for damage
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Check the Rear Access Door
Open the rear door of the printer and look for any stuck paper. Pull gently on both edges of the paper to avoid tearing it.
The inner components near the fuser can be very hot. Let the printer cool before reaching deep inside.
- 2
Inspect the Duplex Module
Remove the duplex module from the rear of the printer if your model has one. Check inside the cavity and on the rollers for hidden scraps of paper.
- 3
Check Tray 2 and Paper Path
Pull out Tray 2 completely. Look inside the printer cavity where the tray slides in to ensure no paper is caught near the pickup rollers.
- 4
Clean the Pickup Rollers
Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water. Wipe the rubber pickup rollers to remove paper dust and restore grip.
- 5
Check the Top Output Bin
Inspect the top output area where printed pages exit. Sometimes a page fails to eject fully and triggers a sensor near the output rollers.
Pull carefully to avoid ripping the paper.
When to contact a professional
Unplug the printer before you do any maintenance. Never touch the fuser area because it stays hot. Call a technician if the 13.b2 error persists after you clear the visible paper paths, or if you hear grinding gears that point to a broken mechanical drive.
