What this means
When your printer reports a jam, paper has stopped inside the mechanism to trip a sensor flag and halt printing.
You probably assume the hardware is broken, but the warning usually comes from outside issues. Overfilling the input tray feeds multiple sheets at once. Damp paper sticks together and does the exact same thing. Paper guides set too tight cause skewed feeds, and damaged edges trigger sensors. Even dust on optical sensors creates false jam errors when no paper is stuck at all.
The warning simply means a sensor tripped. Your printer is not permanently damaged. Address the real cause instead of panicking.
Common causes
- Paper loaded incorrectly in the input tray
- A stack of paper exceeding the maximum capacity of the tray
- Damaged, curled, or wrinkled paper sheets
- Debris or torn paper scraps left inside the paper path
- Dust or toner buildup on the pickup rollers
- Moisture in the paper stack causing sheets to stick together
- Using paper weight or type not supported by the printer
What to check first
- 1Check the printer display or LED indicators for the specific jam location error
- 2Inspect the input tray to see if paper is loaded past the maximum fill line
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Power off the printer
Turn off the printer using the power button and unplug the power cord to ensure safety while clearing the jam.
Always turn off the device before reaching inside.
- 2
Open the front cover
Pull the front cover of the printer down to access the interior toner area.
- 3
Remove the toner cartridge
Gently pull the toner cartridge straight out of the printer to expose the underlying paper path.
- 4
Open the rear cover
Locate the rear access door or cover on the back of the printer and open it fully to access the fuser area.
- 5
Pull out jammed paper forward
If the leading edge of the paper is visible from the front, gently pull it out in the direction of normal paper travel.
- 6
Pull out jammed paper from the rear
If the paper has reached the fuser, pull it gently out through the rear door in the direction it was already traveling to avoid tearing.
- 7
Check the input tray and rollers
Remove all paper from the input tray, check for torn scraps, and fan a fresh stack before reloading.
- 8
Reinstall parts and test
Put the toner cartridge back in place, close all covers securely, plug the printer back in, and turn it on to run a test print.
When to contact a professional
Call a professional if paper scraps are completely inaccessible, internal plastic gears are broken or stripped, or the machine keeps reporting jams when the paper path is clear. Forcing out stuck pieces or fixing internal parts yourself causes more damage and voids your warranty.
