HP Printer Problems and Fixes

HP puts more of the machine into software than the other makes do, and that shapes what goes wrong. HP Smart is not an optional extra on recent models: it is how the printer is set up, reconnected and often how it is driven, and a great many HP problems are solved faster by letting HP Smart find the printer again than by any manual step. It is also why an HP printer can appear to fail after a phone is replaced.

Cartridges are the other HP-specific area. Chips in the cartridges let the printer verify what has been fitted, and models enrolled in HP+ or Instant Ink will only accept genuine cartridges, by agreement rather than by fault. A cartridge error on such a machine is not always a defect; it can be the printer doing exactly what it was set up to do. Knowing which scheme a printer is on saves a lot of time before buying replacements.

HP also now covers Samsung printers, having bought that business in 2017, so a Samsung machine is supported through HP's software and drivers and is found by HP Smart like any other.
