What this means

Your printer is reporting that the cartridge carriage cannot move freely along its track. Physical blockages, a failing drive belt, or dried ink usually cause this.

Do not assume the machine is broken beyond repair. A small scrap of paper often falls into the path, or a dirty encoder strip confuses the sensor.

Watch out for roller mechanism jams because they mimic carriage stalls. Never force a stuck carriage by hand. Doing so strips the drive belt teeth, so look closely at the obstruction before touching anything.

Common causes

  • Paper scrap stuck in the track
  • Dried ink on the guide rail
  • Foreign object dropped inside
  • Loose or broken carriage belt
  • Dirty or detached encoder strip
  • Service station lock failure
  • Carriage motor mechanical failure

What to check first

  1. 1Verify the printer is completely powered off and unplugged from the wall.
  2. 2Check for visible bits of torn paper near the parking station.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1

    Unplug the Printer

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer while it is turned on to release the carriage lock without electric current.

Always unplug before reaching inside to prevent electrical shock or sudden mechanical movement.

  2. 2

    Inspect the Track for Debris

Use a flashlight to look inside the carriage path. Remove any bits of paper, dust bunnies, or foreign objects using tweezers.

Do not use metal tools aggressively near the print head nozzles.

  3. 3

    Check Carriage Movement

Gently push the print head carriage by hand from side to side to check if it moves freely across the track.

Do not force the carriage if it is completely locked, as this can break the belt.

  4. 4

    Clean the Encoder Strip

Locate the thin plastic strip running behind the carriage. Wipe it gently with a lint free cloth slightly dampened with water to remove ink mist.

Do not use harsh chemical cleaners or alcohol on the encoder strip because it wipes off the timing lines.

  5. 5

    Clean and Lubricate Guide Rail

Wipe the metal guide rail clean with a lint free cloth. Apply a single drop of lightweight sewing machine oil to the rail if it feels dry.

Do not use heavy grease or excess oil as it attracts paper dust.

  6. 6

    Check Belt Tension

Inspect the rubber carriage drive belt running along the track. Ensure it is securely attached to the motor and not slipping or frayed.

    Do not overstretch the belt.

  7. 7

    Inspect Parking Station

Look at the far right or left side where the print head parks. Ensure no dried ink or broken plastic is jamming the capping mechanism.

  8. 8

    Perform Power Reset

Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and turn the printer on to test if the carriage homes correctly.

When to contact a professional

Unplug the printer before servicing. Avoid high voltage areas and hot fuser parts. Call a professional technician if the carriage drive belt snaps, plastic gear teeth break off inside the drive assembly, or the carriage motor fails to move despite a clear track and an intact belt.
