What this means
When your HP printer accepts a job but feeds you blank pages, stops halfway, or sits there doing nothing, the machine received your data. The physical delivery just failed. The printer is not broken or permanently offline.
You do not necessarily have an empty ink tank or a dropped Wi-Fi signal. More often, you are dealing with a clogged ink path, a frozen print spooler, or an unfinished setup step. DeskJet and ENVY printers use cartridges with integrated printheads. OfficeJets use separate ink tanks feeding a semi-permanent printhead. On both setups, leaving the protective shipping tape on a new cartridge blocks the nozzles and electrical contacts completely. Corrupted files stuck in the Windows print spooler directory will also trap your print jobs indefinitely.
Network discovery protocols like mDNS and Bonjour can fail if your printer and computer sit on separated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Do not keep trying to print through these errors: thermal inkjet systems use liquid ink to cool their heating elements. If you fire those elements dry, you will burn out the printhead.
Common causes
- Clogged printhead nozzles or dried ink on cartridge contacts
- Empty, low, or unseated ink cartridges
- Protective plastic tape left on newly installed cartridges
- Failed or pending cartridge alignment
- Corrupted print spooler service or stuck print queue in the operating system
- Stale network connection or IP address mismatch on Wi-Fi models
- Carriage stall or small paper obstruction inside the service zone
What to check first
- 1Ensure genuine HP cartridges are installed and all orange pull-tabs or protective tapes are removed
- 2Verify the printer is connected to power directly and shows a solid ready light or screen
- 3Check paper tray has plain white paper loaded and adjusted to the guides
- 4Check if the printer status says 'Offline' or 'Paused' on your computer or mobile device
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Perform a hard power reset
Turn the printer on. While it is on, unplug the power cord directly from the rear of the printer. Unplug the other end from the wall outlet. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and into the printer. Turn the printer on.
- 2
Clear stuck jobs and restart the print spooler
On Windows, open the Services app, find 'Print Spooler', and click Stop. Open File Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, and delete all files in that folder. Return to Services and click Start on Print Spooler. On macOS, open Printers & Scanners, right-click the printer list, select Reset printing system, and re-add the printer.
- 3
Inspect cartridges and remove protective tape
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Remove each cartridge. Inspect the copper-colored electrical contacts and nozzles. Ensure all protective plastic tape is peeled off completely. Reinsert the cartridges firmly until they snap into place.
- 4
Clean the electrical contacts manually
If cartridge error lights persist, unplug the printer. Remove the cartridges. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth or foam swab with distilled water. Gently wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the carriage slot. Let dry for 10 minutes before reinstalling.
Do not touch the ink nozzles directly. Do not use tap water, alcohol, or abrasive materials.
- 5
Run automated printhead cleaning
If pages are blank or missing colors, open the HP Smart app or printer control panel. Navigate to Printer Maintenance or Tools, and select 'Clean Printhead' or 'Clean Cartridges'. Let the printer finish the cycle and print the test page. Repeat once if quality improves slightly.
- 6
Complete cartridge alignment
DeskJet and ENVY printers often require optical alignment. When an alignment sheet prints, place it face down on the scanner glass at the indicated corner. Press the Color Copy button or follow the screen prompts to complete the calibration.
- 7
Verify or recreate the network connection
For wireless models, print a Network Configuration Report from the setup menu. Ensure the printer shares the exact network name (SSID) and subnet as your computer. If the IP address changed, remove the printer from your computer settings and add it again using the HP Smart app or standard OS printer setup.
When to contact a professional
Call a professional and stop troubleshooting if you hear gears grinding, see a snapped carriage belt, or find wet ink pooling under the chassis. Step back if error codes persist even after you have put in fresh genuine HP cartridges. Never force a stuck carriage assembly by hand while the printer has power. Always unplug the unit before you clean internal carriage contacts, and keep all fluids completely away from the rear internal power connector and logic board.
