What this means
AirPrint lets you send documents directly from your iPhone to a compatible network printer without installing extra drivers.
Your phone and printer communicate across your local wireless network using Bonjour and mDNS. Both devices must connect to the exact same Wi-Fi network and subnet.
Turning on both devices is not enough. Guest networks block device communication, and an active VPN on your phone stops local network discovery entirely. If AirPrint still fails, use the manufacturer app instead.
Common causes
- Printer is not on the same Wi-Fi network
- AirPrint is disabled or unsupported on the printer
- Wi-Fi isolation is enabled on the router
- Printer firmware is outdated
- iPhone software is outdated
- Printer is in sleep mode
What to check first
- 1Ensure iPhone and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network
- 2Check that AirPrint is supported by the printer model
- 3Ensure printer has power and no error lights
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Wake the printer and check connection
Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- 2
Check iPhone Wi-Fi network
Open iPhone settings and verify you are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
- 3
Use the share menu to print
Open the photo or document, tap the share icon, scroll down, and select Print.
- 4
Select the printer
Tap Select Printer and choose your printer from the list.
- 5
Restart your devices
Restart both your iPhone and your printer to clear temporary network glitches.
- 6
Update printer firmware
Check the manufacturer instructions to update the printer firmware if it cannot find the network.
When to contact a professional
Call your network administrator if your router has enterprise security or AP isolation enabled that blocks device communication. Reach out for professional help if the printer network card is defective. Never service internal electronics yourself. Check your warranty coverage before replacing hardware. Keep the printer powered on safely throughout troubleshooting.
