What this means
Your iPhone or iPad found the printer, but the print job data failed to get through. The initial connection worked, but the transmission dropped before the page printed.
You might assume the printer is broken or needs new drivers. AirPrint does not use drivers on Apple devices, so your hardware and software are fine. The issue is a temporary breakdown in the network path between your phone and the printer.
This happens because of network dropouts, sleep mode, or IP address conflicts. When the printer goes to sleep, it drops the active network session. Router features like Wi-Fi isolation also block the communication needed to finish sending your job.
Common causes
- Printer went into deep sleep mode
- Wi-Fi interference or weak signal on the mobile device or printer
- Printer IP address changed
- Router isolation or guest network settings blocking local device communication
- Outdated printer firmware
What to check first
- 1Ensure both the Apple device and the printer are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
- 2Check that the printer is powered on and not in a deep sleep state.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Wake up the printer
Press any physical button on the printer control panel to wake it from sleep mode and re-establish network responsiveness.
- 2
Power cycle the printer
Turn off the printer using its power button, wait ten seconds, and turn it back on to refresh its network connection.
Do not unplug the printer while it is in the middle of a firmware update.
- 3
Toggle Wi-Fi on the mobile device
On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, turn off Wi-Fi, wait five seconds, and turn Wi-Fi back on to clear stale network caches.
- 4
Restart your Wi-Fi router
Unplug your wireless router, wait thirty seconds, and plug it back in to clear local routing errors and multicast packet drops.
- 5
Re-add the printer
Remove the printer from your device if listed, and use the printer control panel to reconnect to your local wireless network.
When to contact a professional
Call your network administrator or your ISP if your router has client isolation enabled and you cannot access the settings to turn it off. Call for professional help if the printer has a failing network interface card. Watch out for electrical safety risks when handling power cables or network hardware.
