What this means
Your printer cannot grip the paper correctly. Rubber rollers lose traction over time because cellulose dust from paper builds up on them. Laser printers accumulate toner on separation pads and pickup tires. Inkjet printers collect paper dust and ink mist on feed rollers. This buildup causes misfeeds, multi feeds, and paper skew.
You might assume a feed failure means the printer is broken or needs new internal parts. Usually, the hardware is fine and the rollers just need a cleaning to restore their grip.
Unless the rubber is physically cracked or melted, it is not ruined. Cleaning the accumulated dust and residue fixes most paper slip issues. If the material is actually compromised, cleaning will not restore it.
Common causes
- Paper dust accumulation on the rubber surface
- Natural skin oils transferred from handling paper
- Toner powder residue coating the pickup tires
- Rubber aging and hardening from ambient heat
- Glazing of the rubber compound over time
- Incorrect paper types leaving excessive residue
- Environmental dryness causing rubber to slick over
What to check first
- 1Check that the paper stack is not loaded past the maximum fill line
- 2Ensure the paper guides are snug against the stack without bending the paper
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Power down the printer
Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Always disconnect power before accessing internal printer parts.
- 2
Access the pickup rollers
Open the relevant paper tray or rear access door to locate the rubber pickup rollers.
- 3
Inspect the rollers
Look for a shiny glazed appearance, paper dust coating, or toner residue on the rubber surface.
- 4
Prepare a lint free cloth
Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with warm water or a small amount of mild dish soap.
- 5
Wipe the roller surface
Rotate the roller manually while pressing the damp cloth against it to remove accumulated grime.
- 6
Clean stubborn residue
For stubborn toner buildup, use a rubber rejuvenator or a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth.
Do not soak the rubber or use harsh industrial solvents.
- 7
Dry the rollers completely
Use a second dry, lint-free cloth to remove any excess moisture from the rubber tires.
- 8
Air dry the components
Leave the access doors open for ten to fifteen minutes to let the rollers dry entirely before testing.
- 9
Test feed operation
Plug the printer back in, load a small stack of fresh paper, and run a test print job.
When to contact a professional
Call a technician if your rubber rollers are cracked, worn flat, or disintegrated. Those replacement parts are buried deep inside the machine chassis. You will not easily reach them.
