What this means
Dried ink or debris is blocking the tiny nozzles on your print head. This blockage causes streaks, missing lines, or blank pages because the ink cannot flow freely onto the paper.
You might assume a faded page means your cartridge is empty. Usually, that is wrong. The ink is still inside, but it has dried and hardened inside the microscopic nozzles, creating a physical dam.
Running an automated cleaning cycle uses extra ink to push fluid through those blocked nozzles. Pigment ink clogs are harder to dissolve than dye based clogs. Do not run too many cleaning cycles back to back, or you will overheat the print head.
Common causes
- Infrequent printer use causing ink to dry inside the nozzles.
- Using low quality or incompatible third party ink.
- Dust and paper fibers accumulating near the print head.
- Power turned off incorrectly leaving the print head uncapped.
- Air bubbles trapped in the ink delivery system.
What to check first
- 1Verify ink levels in all cartridges.
- 2Check that the printer is powered on normally.
- 3Print a nozzle check pattern to identify which colors are clogged.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Run Automated Print Head Cleaning
Use the maintenance menu on your printer screen or computer software to run a standard cleaning cycle.
- 2
Print a Nozzle Check Pattern
Print a test page immediately after the cleaning cycle to see if the missing lines or gaps have cleared.
- 3
Run a Deep Clean
If partial clogs remain, run a deep cleaning mode if your printer software includes one.
Wait at least thirty minutes between cleaning cycles to prevent overheating the print head.
- 4
Remove the Print Head
If your printer model has a removable print head, take it out carefully and check for dried ink buildup around the nozzle plate.
Turn off the printer and unplug it before touching any internal components.
- 5
Soak in Warm Water
Place the bottom of the removable print head into a shallow dish of warm distilled water for ten minutes to dissolve dried ink.
Do not submerge the electronic contacts or circuit boards in water.
- 6
Blot and Reinstall
Gently blot the nozzle plate with a lint free paper towel, let it air dry completely, and reinstall it into the printer.
Ensure the print head is completely dry before turning the printer back on to prevent electrical shorts.
When to contact a professional
Unplug the printer before doing any internal maintenance. Avoid getting water on the electrical contacts. If multiple deep cleaning cycles and manual warm water soaking fail to restore ink flow, stop. Call a professional or replace the printer if the print head electronic circuit board shows physical damage.
