What this means
When your printer prints fine but refuses to send scans from the control panel, the physical connection works. The software link is broken. Your computer and printer are not talking to each other for scanning.
Do not assume the scanner hardware failed. Printing uses a different pathway. Printing sends data out, while scanning requires your computer to listen for data coming in from the printer.
This breakdown usually happens because a background service on your computer stopped running, or a firewall blocks the incoming request. On a network connection, a shifting IP address or a public network profile severs the link. USB connections avoid network issues, but they still rely on functional imaging services to receive the file.
Common causes
- Scan service is not running on the computer
- Firewall or security software is blocking network scan traffic
- Printer is connected via WSD port instead of TCP/IP
- Computer IP address changed and broke the active link
- Scanner driver is corrupted or missing
- Printer scanning feature is disabled in device properties
What to check first
- 1Verify that the printer can print a test page successfully
- 2Confirm the printer and computer are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Enable the Scan Service
Open the run command on Windows by pressing the Windows key and R. Type services.msc and press enter. Locate Windows Image Acquisition and ensure the status is running and startup type is automatic.
Do not stop unknown system services.
- 2
Restart All Devices
Turn off your printer, shut down your computer, and unplug your network router. Wait for sixty seconds. Power on the router first, then the printer, and finally the computer.
- 3
Check Firewall and Antivirus
Temporarily disable third-party antivirus firewalls to test if they block network printer communication. Ensure network discovery is turned on in your operating system network settings.
- 4
Enable Scan to Computer Setting
Open the printer software on your computer. Navigate to printer settings or scanner settings. Check the box that enables scan to computer or network scanning.
- 5
Switch from WSD to TCP/IP Port
Open printer properties on your computer. Go to the ports tab. If the printer uses a WSD port, add a standard TCP/IP port using the local IP address of your printer.
- 6
Update or Reinstall Drivers
Download the latest full feature driver package from the manufacturer website. Install the software to ensure the scanner driver and event monitor are active.
When to contact a professional
Call your IT department. You need an administrator if strict VLAN segregation, enterprise firewalls, or domain policies are blocking local device communication.
