Printer Skipping Lines: Causes and How to Fix Them

Skipping lines or leaving gaps means something is blocking or misdirecting the ink or toner before it hits the page. On an inkjet, individual nozzles in the printhead are clogged. Non-genuine ink cartridges make this worse. On a laser printer, look for dirty optical components, transfer problems, or surface damage on the drum unit.

Do not assume the tank is empty just because lines are faded or missing. Low ink causes fading, but a full cartridge still produces gaps if the delivery path is blocked. You might suspect a major hardware failure when the cause is simpler. An incorrect paper setting causes poor ink absorption, and an outdated printer driver causes rendering errors.

Sometimes the machine struggles with physical movement rather than fluid delivery. A dirty encoder strip causes the printhead to lose its place, resulting in misaligned or skipped text lines. Printhead alignment issues create horizontal banding and white gaps between print passes. A dirty paper feed roller causes uneven feeding that mimics missing lines. Static buildup in the paper path deflects where the ink or toner lands.

   Run a printhead cleaning cycle

   Access the printer maintenance menu from the control panel or computer software and run a clean printhead utility. Print a test page afterward to check for improvement.

   Do not turn off the printer during a cleaning cycle.

   Clean the encoder strip

   Unplug the printer. Locate the clear plastic strip running horizontally behind the print carriage. Wipe it gently with a lint free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water if you see smudges.

   Unplug the printer before accessing internal components.

   Use the printer utility software to run a printhead alignment procedure. This fixes misaligned passes that look like gaps.

   Clean the laser scanner glass

   For laser printers, open the top cover and wipe the scanner glass or LED head with a dry, lint free cloth to remove toner dust causing blank streaks.

   Never touch hot internal fusing components.

   Check your computer print settings before sending a job. Ensure the paper type matches what is loaded and set the print quality to high or best instead of draft mode.
