Default Printer Keeps Changing on Windows: How to Stop It

Windows is taking over your printer settings. Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature a built in setting that automatically changes your default printer to the last one you used. The system also tracks your network location to switch printers for you.

When this happens, you might assume your printer is broken or your driver is corrupted. Your printer is fine. It is just reacting to Windows trying to guess what you want based on your recent activity and network connection.

Other things trigger these unwanted changes. Virtual printers register themselves during updates. Network profile switches force Windows to reevaluate your location. Manufacturer background tools reset your choices. If your permissions are restricted, or if you work on a network managed by an enterprise domain, those rules override your personal selections.

   Disable Windows automatic printer management

   Open Windows Settings, go to Bluetooth and devices, then Printers and scanners. Scroll down to the Printer preferences section and uncheck the box that says Let Windows manage my default printer.

   You need administrative rights on the computer to change this setting.

   Manually set your preferred default printer

   In the Printers and scanners list, click on the specific printer you want to use permanently. Click the button that says Set as default. Verify the green checkmark moves to that printer.

   Remove unused or virtual printers

   If virtual printers like Microsoft Print to PDF or OneNote keep taking over, right click them in the printer list and select Remove device.

   Check for background manufacturer software

   Open Task Manager or startup apps and disable background printer utilities from HP, Epson, or Brother that might force their own default printer logic.

   Enable legacy printer mode via registry if needed

   Open Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows, and create a DWORD value named LegacyDefaultPrinterMode with a value of 1 to restore older Windows default printer behavior.

   Editing the registry incorrectly can cause system instability. Back up the registry before making changes.

   Check network profile settings

   If your printer changes when moving locations, ensure your network profile is set consistently to either Public or Private so Windows does not trigger location-based default printer switches.
