What this means
Error 1688 means your printer has detected an empty ink tank or cannot read the remaining level. Canon printers store ink data directly on the cartridge chip. When that data reports empty, the printer stops to protect itself.
This error usually appears when you use refilled or non genuine cartridges. The cartridge often still has ink inside, but the chip keeps reporting empty.
The printer is reacting to a data reading, not a physical lack of ink. However, continued printing with a truly empty cartridge will overheat the print head.
Common causes
- Ink cartridge is completely empty
- Refilled cartridge chip still reports empty
- Dirty electrical contacts on the cartridge
- Dirty electrical contacts inside the print head carriage
- Incompatible or third-party ink cartridge installed
- Printer memory corrupted regarding ink status
- Cartridge improperly seated in the slot
What to check first
- 1Check which cartridge is flagged
- 2Verify if the cartridge is third-party or refilled
- 3Inspect physical ink level if cartridge is transparent
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Bypass via Stop Button
Press and hold the Stop button on the printer for about 5 to 8 seconds until the error clears.
Printing with an empty cartridge may damage the print head.
- 2
Reseat the Cartridge
Open the printer cover, remove the flagged ink cartridge, and snap it back firmly into place.
Handle cartridges carefully to avoid spilling ink.
- 3
Clean Electrical Contacts
Remove the cartridge and gently wipe the golden electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab.
Do not touch the nozzles or print head contacts directly with your fingers.
- 4
Disable Ink Level Detection
If prompted on screen or via utility software, hold down the Stop button to disable ink level detection for that tank.
You will no longer receive accurate ink warnings for this tank.
- 5
Install a Genuine Canon Cartridge
Remove any problematic third-party cartridge and replace it with a new, genuine Canon ink tank.
- 6
Perform a Power Reset
Unplug the printer while it is turned on, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back into a direct wall outlet.
- 7
Check Cartridge Chip Alignment
Ensure the small microchip on the side of the cartridge is clean and properly aligned.
When to contact a professional
Call a professional if your printer fails to recognize multiple new genuine cartridges. This points to a permanent logic board or print head carriage failure. Do not touch print head contacts with bare fingers. Continuing past this point carries a risk of ink stains. Check your warranty status before seeking outside help because repairs for these internal hardware failures may be covered.
