What this means

Your printer is warning you that the drum unit reached its estimated page count limit. This is a proactive alert to prevent sudden interruptions. Your printer will keep printing normally for now, but the drum needs replacement soon.

Replacing your toner cartridge does not reset this counter. Brother printers keep the toner and the drum completely separate. One drum unit typically outlasts several toner cartridges before it physically wears out.

Your printer has not stopped working today. However, plan to buy a replacement soon. Continuing to use an expired drum eventually causes poor print quality and smudged pages.

Common causes

  • The drum unit page counter has reached the preset manufacturer limit
  • Accumulated toner dust on the corona wire
  • Paper dust or debris adhering to the drum roller surface
  • A worn or scratched drum roller surface
  • Using non-genuine toner that deposits excess powder
  • Incorrectly seated drum unit in the printer chassis
  • A drum counter that was not reset after a previous replacement

What to check first

  1. 1Check if the message specifies the drum unit rather than the toner cartridge
  2. 2Examine printed pages to determine if print quality is actually degraded
  3. 3Verify whether the drum unit has been recently replaced without resetting the counter

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1

    Inspect print quality

Print a test page to see if the output is still acceptable or if defects are already visible.

Do not touch the shiny surface of the drum cylinder with your fingers.

  2. 2

    Clean the corona wire

Open the front cover, pull out the drum unit assembly, and slide the green tab back and forth several times across the corona wire. Return the tab to its home position.

Make sure to return the green tab to the far left position or your printed pages will have vertical black stripes.

  3. 3

Check the drum for physical debris

Look at the roller surface for any stuck paper dust or toner clumps. Gently wipe with a dry lint-free cloth if needed.

Never use alcohol or chemical cleaners on the drum surface.

  4. 4

    Reseat the drum unit

Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit, then reinstall it securely until it clicks into place. Put the complete assembly back into the printer.

Ensure the front cover is completely closed after reinstallation.

  5. 5

    Order a replacement drum

Purchase a genuine Brother replacement drum unit so you have it ready when the print quality degrades further.

Third party drums may cause persistent error codes.

  6. 6

    Replace the drum unit

Open the front cover, remove the old drum unit, separate the toner cartridge, and install the toner into the new drum unit before inserting it into the printer.

Do not expose the drum unit to direct sunlight or room light for an extended period.

  7. 7

    Reset the drum counter

With the front cover open, follow the specific menu prompts or button presses for your model to reset the drum life counter for the new unit.

Only reset the counter when a new drum unit has actually been installed.

  8. 8

    Test print a status sheet

Print a device report to verify the drum warning has cleared and print quality is restored.

When to contact a professional

Call a professional if your printer displays persistent electrical error codes after you install a new genuine drum unit. Call for help if internal drive gears are broken and grinding. Running the machine in this state is a bad idea. While checking inside, do not touch the drum surface oils or expose the drum to bright light.
